Different Types of Garage DoorWhether you're building your home, adding on a garage, or simply replacing an old or worn garage door, there are many different things you need to know before you buy a garage door. Many people don't really think about garage doors coming in different styles, colours, finishes, and types, but they do. It's very important that you know what type of garage door you want before you buy it. In fact, it's a good idea to learn about the different types early on in the decision-making process so you know what options you have. Your garage door is one of the most visible parts of your home, and it's most likely the largest moving part as well. Because of this, you need to make certain your garage door is in working order. There are two types of garage door: sectional roll-ups and swing-ups/tilt-ups. The most popular type of garage door is the sectional roll-up. These garage doors are more expensive than tilt-ups, but they're much easier to operate and they're safer, too. In fact, you can even open a sectional roll-up garage door while your car is parked right in front of it. Sectional roll-up doors fit behind the garage wall and roll upwards section by section, giving you more clearance and protection from the elements. Sectional roll-up doors are actually almost weather-tight, and they're much safer than tilt-up garage doors since the actual door is behind the garage wall. With tilt-up doors, the actual door is outside the garage wall and can be pried open if it doesn't close tightly. The tilt-up or swing-up model is made of one single panel instead of three or four panels hooked together with hinges like the sectional roll-up doors are. This single section tilts or pivots up and out. Because of that, you have to watch just how close your car is to the door when it opens; otherwise, the door may tilt up and hit the front of your car (or you, if you're standing too close). This is one of the biggest concerns with tilt-up garage doors. Both types of garage doors can be made from different materials, including fibreglass, steel, and wood. Many feature windows, automatic openers, and locking mechanisms. You can purchase them already painted or purchase them bare and paint them yourself. Both types of garage doors can also be hung without professional help. In fact, they're a fairly easy do-it-yourself project, although you will need a couple of people to actually lift the door up and get it in place. There are obviously advantages and disadvantages to both types of doors. Sectional roll-ups are more expensive, but they are more secure, and you won't risk injury or damage when opening them. On the other hand, tilt-up units are often a bit easier to install since you don't have to install a track, but they can hit your car. No matter which type you choose, be sure to shop around a bit to find the best deal. |
